Older Blog Post 3 (Open Letter)

It is hard not to fix some of the grammar or style of these older posts. But the voice of the writing still reflects me well. This is an open letter blog post to my high school football coach, posted March 2010.

“Open letter to Coach Yeaman, my football coach.”

Dear Coach Yeaman,

            I hope this letter finds you in good spirits and still coaching.  At the moment, I am at a crossroads in my life and find myself relying on a foundation you helped install in me to get me through this moment.  I do not know if you consciously thought of this foundation in your coaching philosophy, all I know is that it was a major factor in how our athlete – coach relationship was built.  And that foundation was Truth.  The truth of where I was athletically, of who I could become, and what it took to get things done.  I do not remember you ever talking about this foundation, but you coached it.  Even on my first day of organized football.

            I had just moved to Douglas, Wyoming, the summer of 1984.  I would have been a seventh grader and wanted the chance to play football.  I wanted to be a running back.  I had big dreams of breaking tackles and running for the end zone.  But, I was over-weight.  Coming from a lifestyle of sitting in front of the TV, playing video games (Atari at that time) and eating frozen pizza almost all the time.  I was at 200 plus pounds, but in my head, I was a running back.

            We had finished warming up, the weight of the helmet was stiffing up my neck, and I was sweating; yet feeling good.  You hollered to break up into offensive groups.  Running backs were in the west corner of the field (oh yes, I remember because me and the light post in that corner would be good friends soon).

            “Monkey rolls.  Eighth graders show them how it is done.”

            Three boys fell to the ground in a blur of motion, one body popping up every other second as the other two rolled.  The whistle blew, three more bodies.  My turn.  We did not make it ten seconds.  I did not know it then, but I was a DK (drill killer).  My group did not get through a cycle, but I was winded.  I walked back to the line to wait my second turn.  My head drooping.

            “Let’s do this right this time, men.”  I was determined to do it right.  My group actually got through a couple of rotations before I killed it again, but this time it was because I was going to be sick.  My body felt like lead, my head light, and I stumbled toward the light pole for support.  I could feel the group watching as the wave of nausea moved up and out.  I did not even have time to take off my helmet.  I do not know how long I was there, but it felt like forever.  Just when I thought I could stand, another wave would hit.  In the distance, I could hear practice continuing without me.

            At some point, I stood up and there you were.

            “Get a drink, rinse off your helmet, and why don’t you go practice with the line,” and then you patted my shoulder and walked away.  I was heartbroken, but headed to the other side of the field.  You did not make a big deal about it, but simply stated what was true at that moment.  I was not a running back, yet.

            I would spend the next month finding my athletic ability.  I practiced as a center; in fact, I would be a long snapper, at times, even in high school.  Many nights after practice I would get home and fall asleep from exhaustion.  However, toward the end of the season I was practicing as a halfback.  (Remember my first attempt at running our reverse play? How John and I just ran into each other at full speed.  I do not think I ever saw you laugh that hard ever again.)

            I was lucky enough to have you as my junior high and high school coach.  Over the next five seasons, there would be all kinds of moments where you would use the truth as a foundation of coaching.

            I got the chance to be a varsity kick returner as a freshman because I held onto a punt as I was leveled during a JV game.  As a senior, a junior wanted my position as kick returner.  He was faster then me.  I lost the “run-off”.  Yet, I did not lose my position, you said there was more to returning than speed.  You even apologized to me when you were wrong.  We were flagged for false start during a trick two-point play.  On the sideline, you yelled at me for it.  However, after watching film you apologized because it was the fullback.  There are a number of different memories I have that you let me learn the hard way.  But it always revealed the truth of the situation or my effort.

            I wish I could say we had won a state title, but my senior year we went 2-6.  We lost our last game in triple overtime.  I wish I could say my life was a typical teenager’s, but it was not.  I had to go through some very rough times.  But your greatest lesson to me, the one that helped me through high school, and throughout my entire life happened in eighth grade.

            It was halfway through the season; I had grown a few inches.  I had filled out some. Life in school was good.  I had made some good friends during my seventh grade year.  Home life had, at the moment, settled down.  I was feeling good.

            We were practicing offensive plays.  I was not actually dogging it, but I was not practicing hard.  I was being tackled by the first hits.  The whistle blew.  I dropped the ball down, headed to the huddle, only to be grabbed by the facemask, and turned 180 degrees to face you.

            Honestly, I cannot remember exactly what you said.  The main point was that I was too big, too talented to be playing like I was.  The message was delivered hard and fast.  The message was not negative, but I was crying.  You blew the whistle, called the play, and continued to tell me that I needed to hit that hole like I could.

            I could barely see the offensive line through my tears.  My mind had cleared with an intense “I’ll show you” focus.  Snap.  I shot forward.  I do not remember seeing the hole or the defense.  But I ran.

            The whistle blared, “Freeze, everyone.  Don’t move.”  I “opened” my eyes.  I stood alone looking at the tennis/basketball courts in the distance.

            You hollered for me to turn around.  There was a line of junior high players on the ground highlighting my path.

            “That is what you are capable of, Jamey.”  And practice continued.

            Again, it would be nice to express how life was perfect from that moment on, but that would not be the truth.  I did get a scholarship to play football at Hastings College.  But I quit after one season (my biggest regret).  I have had other low points, but have focused my efforts and ran through.  I am now a father of five and married to a lovely wife.  I am a teacher and a coach.  And one of the founding aspects of my coaching philosophy is truth.  To show my athletes what they can do, just as you did for me so many seasons ago.  Thank you, Coach Yeaman.

A Gray 2023

I am ready for 2023 to be over.

Not to rush forward through my days. But yes I’m ready to go through the ritual of counting down the last seconds of 2023 and celebrating the idea of a new year, a new beginning. 

This is not a post about living each day to its fullest, or some other motivational cliché that sometimes leads people to a false sense of reality.

This post is acknowledging the fact that the seasons of our lives can be filled with highs and lows… making for a gray year.

I started to tear up Christmas shopping last week. We were looking for gifts from my dad, and out of habit I said, “This can be from Grandma and Grandpa Hudson,” as I held up a book for one of my daughters. My throat locked up as I looked at my wife, suddenly holding back tears that wanted to run. (For any new readers, I lost my mom this summer… my wife lost her mom in September.)

There have been other low points, competing at poetry slams, rejection emails and other small nicks at my confidence as a poet and writer that add up.

There have been some cool moments, too. Published my book, While Death Waits, in October. I completed every challenge I set for myself this year. I’ve laughed with students and family. Read some great books. I have shared ideas with you, reader, through this blog. Been a guest on two podcasts this year. Plus, Dante and I have faithfully produced our podcast all year. 

There were some good days.

But as a year, 2023 was gray. 

Life is like that. And I think we hinder ourselves by trying to cover up or ignore the low points. When we don’t recognize the dark days, or try to fill them with color, we miss the opportunity to grow, to feel a depth of our lives that can strengthen us in so many different ways. We gain strength when we deal with heartbreak. We understand ourselves and life better by embracing the hurt. That understanding allows us to live that moment, but also the happy moments with more depth, more understanding, more appreciation.

It is not easy though. There were a lot of gray days. 

But I look sharp in dark colors…

Foundations of a Good Life

Being in education I see too many students carrying the weight of the world in their backpacks. Their faces straining as they drop their packs next to their desk. They sit at their desks, rolling out their shoulders. Sometimes they hold their head in their hands, trying to gain the strength to learn how to write a compare and contrast essay.

I know how they feel, I was that student. In some ways, this post is written for them. These are the top five foundational characteristics to a good life. 

Number 5

Curiosity. This world is filled with wonderful things. Staying curious about the world will open new opportunities. Curiosity is the willingness to be adventurous, even during a routine day. To not close your mind to the beautiful and cool things around adds depth to the ordinary aspects of life.

Number 4

Goals. I know some people might disagree with this idea, but goals do not have to be grand, they can be simple to-do lists you make for the day. They can be grand, though. Any level of goals creates action. Goals develop purpose for our lives. Even during the roughest moments, we can take steps toward the goals we have set. 

Number 3

Others. I’ve said this before. “Life is a team sport.” This is the most complex characteristic. Creating the right team is critical to achieving a good life, but it is hard to create that team at different times in life. I will acknowledge that (see number one characteristic). You don’t need a big team, you need a strong team that supports each other.

Number 2

Love. This might come as a shock for some of the faithful readers of this blog because I have written about Love in a number of different ways. Love is a foundation for a great life, no doubt. Keeping an open heart, being vulnerable to receive love, opens up a powerful way to live. I do believe that Love is the only way we create an incredible society and world. But…

Number 1

Strength. Every characteristic listed needs, in some ways, strength to accomplish. Strength to make hard decisions. Strength to keep your heart and mind open. Strength to choose to love others, even when they hurt you. Strength to endure when your backpack feels like it is carrying the weight of the world. You build strength by working on keeping your curiosity of the world, striving toward goals, finding the right team, and choosing love… you’ll find you are stronger than you know.

Tomorrow I will share the top five things that bring me joy in this life.

Just a warning, I may be writing this blog for me (life is stressful at the moment)… but I think you might like it.

Welcome to time being a single piece of pie left and 14 people wanting it.

Welcome to money being a battlefield. Bills are tanks that slowly advance but hit you from far away with loud shells that leave holes in your landscape. Making it difficult to outrun the tanks; see they run on continuous tracks.

#dadlife has no filters to make things look better. It is filled with vomit, bags under your eyes, dirty dishes and loads of soiled laundry… so many loads of laundry. #dadlife is filled with frowns, a fading body, and carpet worn thin from the family routine.

Welcome to feeling like your dreams are expired spices in the cupboard. Always in sight, thought of when cooking, but no one likes their scrambled eggs with seasoning. So your dreams sit in the back, stale and out of date.

#dadlife is being last in line at the zoo. Making sure everyone sees the tigers while you answer the questions and making sure that a little one doesn’t wander off. You get the last drops of water and few chips left in the bag.

Welcome to finding strength you didn’t know you had. #dadlife builds your heart and mind, it is crossfit training for every aspect of your life. Every day is a rep for life, building strength to handle your children’s heartaches, while striving to build a home. #dadlife teaches you how to move in 12 different ways. You become limber and agile, being capable of handling different situations at the same time.

#dadlife breaks your heart with joy and then heals it with love as you watch your children shine, on a stage, with a colored pencil, or on the court. Your heart cracks as they express their talents, fulfilling their dreams. The cracks are then healed when they catch your eye with a smile that says thank you.

Welcome to #dadlife. It is like trying to find a treasure with a faded map. You can just make out the directions, but many times you forge your own way. Finding unique coins along the unexplored paths. After awhile you can read the next landmark, make a slight adjustment to stay on track. But soon find that the map is hard to read again. So, you decide which path to take on your own. Finding small treasures along the way.

#dadlife is just a hashtag, but through all the hurdles of this dad’s life, I am happy to share both the sorrow and joy of a life lived.

My Holiday Wish

wish

With only a few days until Christmas and a week before New Years, my thoughts fluctuate between what I could have done better last year and what I want the next year to be like. In a time where it seems our society is divided, where hate is easy to express, I wish you strength of spirit. I hope your life shines with joy even in the face of hardships.

I look forward to sharing this next year with you, to making it the best year yet.

Strength of Joy

I’ve been working through a deep life concept, but I will get to that in a minute. Let me share some anecdotes that connect to the idea first.

IMG_5667First my youngest daughter. She is a year and a half. She is at that stage where life is simply awesome. She is learning to use the stairs, learning to talk, learning to blow kisses. She will stop eating to stand in her seat and dance. Her brothers are teaching her how to fist bump. Life is filled with everyday joy for her. At graduation this weekend a mother of one of the seniors reinforced that idea when she stopped me to say how wonderful it was to watch my daughter dance during the graduation. There is a moment in the ceremony when the seniors give roses to their parents. This year the song was “Here I Go Again” by Whitesnake. The mother then said, “She could all teach us what it means to be joyful.”

As many of you know I am at a major crossroads in my life. And things are not going well regarding what next year will bring for me. I let that stress get to me a couple of days ago when I lost my cool in front of my kids. I can’t even remember why now. But as I read stories to my middle girls and asked them what their favorite things were from the day, I was brought back to the concept I had been thinking of…

JoyStrength

I’m not talking about feeling happiness. I’m talking about a deep appreciation of the blessings we have in our lives.

Happiness is eating brownies. Joy is making the brownies for someone else and enjoying their smiles as they eat. (Of course we have a brownie, too. We can feel joy and be happy at the same time.)

Negative feelings can over shadow our lives. It takes strength to combat feelings of fear, doubt, and disappointment. That strength comes from Joy. It takes courage to see the beauty of our lives, a child’s smile or the stars shining, when we feel like our world is falling apart. The catch is that when we pay attention to those things that bring us joy that leads us to feel the strength to battle through the tough times. It is a cycle, a positive cycle that builds us up.

Joy doesn’t remove a bad situation. It gives us the strength to get through it with a loving and confident heart. To stand up and dance even if it is dinnertime.
